Fergus Fedderfeeny's Food Factory - An Excerpt

Today I wanted to show Farnsworth a little love... Farnsworth is the bumbling hero in the first of the recently released Middle Grade children's series set in the dummy town of Gwillville:

CHAPTER ONE - The Missing Supplies

“Uh, nope, now that don’t seem right,” Farnsworth muttered as he swept the floor of the supply room. “Looks like some things is missin’.” He took a closer look. “Yep, yep, uh yep,” he nodded his head in agreement with himself.

Farnsworth had first noticed that some of the food supplies seemed to be missing yesterday evening as he’d cleaned up the restaurant and the supply room for Mr. Fedderfeeny. At the time he thought that maybe he’d miscounted things but this morning his worst suspicions were confirmed.

“Hmm, what to do?” he asked himself. He let his head sink down to his chest and propped himself against the tall broom he was carrying. He continued to stand there for a while just thinking.

“Well, better check out back,” he eventually said out loud. Grabbing the broom firmly he set off for the small area that was mostly unused, tucked away in the far corner of the supply room. “Nope.” It was still empty.

Farnsworth didn’t like situations like this. In the nine years he had been working at the Food Factory he had only had to mention problems a couple of times to Mr. Fedderfeeny. The last time was about two years ago when The Mangler got stuck after they changed their flour suppliers and it threw lumps of meat and pastry all over the pie room. The mess was incredible. It seemed that everything in the room had somehow got coated with something. Even Farnsworth was covered head to waist with lumps of gooey meat sauce and pastry. His unfortunate mistake however was to walk into the restaurant that was full of customers, looking like someone that had come back from the dead. Several customers had screamed, one fainted and two of the waitresses had thrown trays of food everywhere in shock. Needless to say Mr. Fedderfeeny had suggested that in future emergencies, Farnsworth should consider his appearance first before entering the restaurant area.

Thankfully the restaurant wasn’t yet open for the day and so at least he didn’t have to consider his appearance. But, and this was really the worst thing, Mr. Fedderfeeny wasn’t here yet either. It would be at least an hour or two before he arrived.

“Well, just have to tell him later.”

In the meantime there were jobs that needed doing, the most important of which was making the day’s supply of pies. Farnsworth propped the broom up against the side wall and wandered off to the pie room.

The pie room was a sight to behold. It was only about twenty feet long and about fifteen feet wide but crammed into every piece of space were incredible contraptions that had individual and unique purposes. Farnsworth delighted over every machine in the room. Except The Mangler. The Mangler was dangerous and unforgiving. He always moved carefully around it and kept his operating time of it down to an absolute minimum. Still, thankfully The Mangler was the final machine in the pie-making process.

The first job of the day was to measure out the flour from the large tub in the corner and drop it into the pastry-making machine. He then added the salt, butter and eggs and closed the lid. Farnsworth pressed the large green ‘on’ button and stood back as mechanical hands started to do their work, mixing the ingredients together and dispensing water as necessary from the automatically controlled tap on the side of the machine. Within a few minutes Farnsworth relaxed as the machine made its ‘whoosh, slurp, bang, bang’ noise that he had come to know and love over the years. He smiled to himself.

Next it was on to the meat stripper and cutter. Farnsworth stepped into the cold storage room and pulled out some big cuts of meat that would make up today’s pies. He closed the door to the cold room and shuffled over to the huge meat chopper laden down with meat. One piece at a time he filled the machine and compacted it all as best he could. At last it was full to capacity and he set the machine in motion, standing well back as sharp blades began their relentless and unforgiving work.

Finally there was only the sauce to consider. This was the smallest and simplest of the machines even though it took the most time to do its job. Farnsworth reminded himself that one day he wanted to make some improvements to it. He was sure that with a few modifications the sauce-cooker could make the sauce in half the time that it currently took. Still, for now it had to be done the old-fashioned way. Farnsworth measured out the scoops of sauce ingredients from the individual spice containers and counted them into the open funnel that was located on top of the sauce-cooker. “Thirty-one, thirty-two, thirty-three,” he absentmindedly said out loud as he always did at the end of his counting. He closed the lid to the funnel, turned the machine on and waited a few minutes until the confirming ‘swoosh’ of the hot water could be heard.

Step one of his jobs had been completed. In an hour or so he could return and gather up all the completed parts and fire up The Mangler which would actually put all the pies together.

Farnsworth returned to the supply room determined to find out exactly what was missing so he could report it all to Mr. Fedderfeeny. He was pretty sure it was some of the vegetables but, just in case, he got out the large ledger he kept of all the supplies purchased and used. Every day he had to keep this updated so Mr. Fedderfeeny knew exactly what was being consumed. Walking up and down the rows of supplies Farnsworth made a mental count of everything and compared it to the totals written on the ledger. Eventually he found the discrepancies. He was short on three of the vegetables. Carrots, peas and cabbage.

“Yep, yep. That’s it. That’s what’s missin’.” He counted the vegetables with some deliberation and finally concluded there were about five bunches of carrots, a bag of peas and four cabbages missing. “Hmm,” he continued. “Not a lot. Numbers’ll be messed up tho’. Mr. Fedderfeeny doesn’t like it when his numbers are messed up.”

In all the time that Farnsworth had been working for Fergus Fedderfeeny he had only ever seen him angry a couple of times. That is, apart from the time Farnsworth got covered in meat sauce and pastry. Both those times were when there had been a problem with the numbers. Last time it was all about five bags of peas that had been miscounted and placed in the wrong area of the supply room. Mr. Fedderfeeny had been in a really bad mood on that day. Everything was about the numbers to Mr. Fedderfeeny. He was a very likeable and respected boss but you never wanted him to get upset over the numbers. They were a big part of Mr. Fedderfeeny’s life. Farnsworth never did the numbers; he let Mr. Fedderfeeny do them. But he knew this time the numbers weren’t going to be right.

“Gonna be a tough day today. Hope he’s in a good mood when he gets here.” Farnsworth’s train of thought was cut short by the sound of a loud buzzer. “Whoa, fixin’s are ready for the pies.”

Back in the pie room all the machines had done their jobs. Pastry was neatly stacked up by the pastry-maker, meat was cut into small pieces by the meat-chopper, and sauce was gently steaming next to the sauce-cooker. Farnsworth went over to the shelves next to The Mangler and reached up for the pie dishes. He carefully heaped them in the side of The Mangler and then emptied the chopped meat into the big bucket inside the front of the machine. The sheets of pastry were stacked carefully into the feeder at the front of The Mangler and lastly the sauce was poured into a funnel at the very top of the machine. Farnsworth carefully checked and rechecked to make sure every door and lid was closed and walked completely around the machine one more time to make absolutely sure. When he was confident everything was ready he reached out a hand and pulled the lever that kicked everything into motion. There was a large creaking sound and then a short period of silence before all of a sudden everything seemed to happen and The Mangler nearly wrenched itself off its base. Farnsworth stepped back as he did every day, wary of the power and ferocity of this machine.

All at once everything started moving and Farnsworth was deafened by the noise of clanking dishes, cutting blades, scooped up meat, dripping sauce and pressed pastry. Slowly the pies started appearing on the conveyor belt at the far end of The Mangler and Farnsworth moved to collect them and stack them neatly on shelves ready-made for the pies. As the last of the pies made its way along the conveyor belt Farnsworth breathed a sigh of relief and wiped some sweat from his brow. “I hope that’s the worst of it over. Nothin’ to do now but wait,” he said to himself. “Fer the boss!”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Mar 29, 2011 – Redmond author and resident, Paul Dorset has published a new business reference book, 'The 10 Hour Project Manager' - Strategies for managing successful projects. It is priced at $4.99 on the Amazon Kindle marketplace.

The book is about the meta-rules associated with managing a project. It's about the management skills that will not only help you decide what you need to pay close attention to but also what you can safely de-prioritize. This will allow you to focus on the relevant and important items in a project. Every project is a little different, but the meta-rules are the same. By the end of this book you will have all the tools necessary to be able to successfully manage most projects in only ten hours a week (during the majority of the lifecycle). Just think what you will be able to do with all that spare time. Maybe you'll even be able to start that little money-earning side project you've always intended to get underway!

Most likely the reader is someone who has been managing projects for a few years, in a variety of different situations. Maybe you're a consultant that wanders from project to project, or an employee that gets passed from pillar to post depending on the hot topic of the month. Either way, you're not fresh out of school and you've seen a scary thing or two happen during project implementations. What you're really looking for are some words of wisdom, or maybe a guide you can refer to as necessary, that will enable you to manage your projects more efficiently and cut down your work weeks to something more sustainable. You would ideally like to spend some quality time somewhere outside the confines of your office.

The objective of this book is to enable the reader to successfully manage most every project you will ever be given in less than ten hours a week. I have managed successful projects in many companies, in many countries, in many cultures and in many situations. Nearly without fail I have only paid very close attention to the management of that project for about ten hours a week, over the majority of the project lifecycle. In some cases, it was even less!

It has long been a desire of mine to write a book on project management, and I have spent most of the last fifteen years practicing the art worldwide. During that time many people have asked me for some written guidance but until now there just hasn't been the right opportunity to do so. So here we have it.

I've tried to write something straightforward, told in the way I speak. I'm not a teacher and this isn't a classroom book. It's a series of guidelines told through stories and real life experiences that have been etched into my head over the years as I've traveled the world managing all sorts of projects, large and small. It's my turn to pass the baton on. I hope you each find a little something that makes the purchase of this book worth the price of a beer. Cheers!

"...it's the sort of short book that puts a space into perspective that should be popular. It's the meta-skill set that typically comes with a lot of practice, and directs people towards what they should pay attention to regardless of project procedures"

"I have read your book and it has been a very enjoyable and educational experience...You have done an excellent job of capturing the essentials of running a successful project. I am so proud of you and more so for the fact that I got to work and learn from you"

"...there are too many 'PMs' who have grown as natural progression from development or technical role and who works hard but does not have roadmap on key items for effective management. This book provides that in a nutshell..."

Xannu - The Prophecy : Reviews are in!

It's the last few days of March and my first Xannu book has now been available on Kindle for about one month. It's been a good month and I am hoping that things continue to move steadily forwards. So I thought I'd write a quick post to encourage some of you to have a look at my book. It's a steal at $0.99!! Here are some of the reviews:
"This is a wonderfully engaging tale, imaginatively written. An interwoven tale of two worlds - present day and a mystical land of an age long past - but is it? Once I started reading, it was difficult to put down! You'll find yourself drawn into the story and immersed into the lives of the characters. Highly recommended for all ages."
"Taking place in both a fantasy world and present day, Paul Dorset takes readers of all ages through a great tale of adventure. I recommend this for young adults seeking adventure and for adults seeking a "get away" from this world of "hurry up." This will be a series you will start and find yourself anxiously awaiting the next book to see what adventures are coming up."
"Wonderful book full of rich, interesting characters and fast paced, evolving plot lines. From the very beggining the reader is drawn into the tale and the pages turn as you long for "what happens next." I highly recommend this book for fantasy lovers, those who appreciate great characters, and those who like a good-old-fashioned page turner."
"Refreshing children's fantasy that continues to draw you in until finished. As an adult, I enjoyed it as much as my kids did."
"I have just finished reading this and I've immediately downloaded book two and the brevity of this review reflects my eagerness to get started reading it."
I am looking forward to the reviews of the second book. Meanwhile, I am currently two thirds of the way through writing the third one and am expecting to release it later this year.

Marketing your books - Looking for a publicist

It's been an interesting few weeks trying to market my books all by myself. I've been around the block a little over the years and picked up a few tricks, but there's so many things to do and so little time in every day. I wish I knew exactly where to start. My forte is writing, not marketing, and so for every piece of marketing I do it takes me a lot longer than a marketer would take to do it. So the question is, do I hire a publicist to help me, or do I just carry on doing it myself?

I want to hire a publicist as I know ultimately that they would be the right person to help me. I have confidence in my books to let them speak for themselves and enough strangers have read them now and given positive feedback. So that just leaves the publicity. I need publicity. It's the only way I'm going to sell more books. Some of my friends are doing a great job of getting me some local publicity, but I need that statewide and national exposure.

It's a big risk to spend the sort of money most publicists want. I would much rather give up a small portion of my royalties for the service. Unfortunately, no one seems to work that way! So, what to do? Well as I try a few things out during the next couple of weeks, I'll report back. Have a great day.

PS - if you're a publicist and you want to try something different, drop me an email: john(at)pauldorset.com

Players, Referee or Manager? - Seattle Sounders v Houston Dynamo

Not my usual blog post today. Life will return to normal very soon...

I felt I had to blog after yesterday's disappointing soccer game that saw the Seattle Sounders managing to scrape a 1-1 draw with the Houston Dynamos (and me, a season ticket holder, leaving the stadium at half-time for the first time ever in my life). Here are the contending reasons for the poor showing:

Players - Despite 15 shots in the first half of play, Seattle didn't convert a single one. Poor show

Referee - Despite obvious serious fouls in the 3rd and 71st minutes, Seattle were not rewarded with either a sending off or a penalty on Houston

Manager - Sigi Schmid continues to field a team that shows no coordination either up front or on the wings

So, what's the verdict? The American MLS is about the only league in the world where there is no promotion or relegation system and where managers are never constantly worried about losing their jobs. In England, a series of poor results from a team that is expected to do well is usually rewarded with a sacking of the manager. Further, if the team does poorly, they drop a division at the end of the season. Here it's about 'the long haul' as Sigi would put it - 'being there at the end of the season' so that the team can get into the playoffs. The system is broken.

In my opinion there is no incentive for teams to learn how to play exceptional football and take chances during the regular season here. Teams are satisfied with taking draws along the way, knowing that as long as they stay in contention, mid-table, they will get through to the play-offs. So this is sort of a manager's problem. But the whole league is broken too.

Then there's the referees and linesmen who, unlike every other country in the world once more, don't have to be FIFA qualified to officiate a game. What is wrong with this picture? No wonder they can't make decent decisions when they are needed. Actually, I have to say that generally the refereeing standards in the MLS are abysmal. Repeat - abysmal.

Oh, I guess I should also write about the players too. People criticize the MLS for not attracting the right quality of players to play. It's no wonder. With poor refereeing and managers that don't play the right kind of football, the best players move on. This has already happened with the best two international players that Seattle have had - in only the first two seasons! First Freddie Ljungberg left after 'disagreements' in 2009, and a couple of weeks ago Blaise Nkufo did exactly the same. This points to a management problem to me. There is something wrong in Denamrk as the saying goes. Something terribly wrong.

So, in conclusion, I'd like to blame the players for playing so bad and I'd like to blame the referees for officiating so poorly, but in the end I will blame the team's managers and the MLS system. There are no incentives and a sub-standard level of managers here. Bring in someone from Europe to manage one of these teams. Build something that is hungry to win. Be ruthless with the players. Make them perform. Then sort out the officiating. The players will end up sorting out themselves.

I look at league tables from other countries and after a few games there are huge differences between top and bottom teams. And those things get sorted - by sackings. Here in America it seems to me the public likes to watch a league where everyone is 'even'. Please, please, please, bring some decent soccer to the MLS, otherwise I fear that I may not even last the first 45 minutes the next time I am at the stadium. Thank God there are still 36,000 other Seattle Sounders fans that will still go to games - for a while.

Rant over....

Working with an Illustrator

I'm not a good artist. Actually, I suck big time! But like all things in life, it's just a case of finding someone who is really good at what they do and get them to help you out!

All books need good cover pictures and when I created my Xannu books I was very lucky to have the services of my eldest daughter to hand. She drew me two excellent covers and I have had wonderful feedback on the quality of them. But recently I have been readying my Gwillville series of Middle Grade books for publication and I didn't know anyone locally who could help out. Thankfully I discovered the site guru.com. Guru allows you to create projects for all sorts of things from business cases to illustrations. I thought I'd give it a try as it seemed very reputable and the comments very favorable. Besides, it cost me nothing to create a project and open it to bidders. Long story short, twenty minutes later I had created my project and I sat back for a week to see who replied.

In all I had about thirty people who replied! Guru automatically tries to rate the replies for you, depending on their previous feedback and work on Guru, but you still have to go through them all one by one. There are lots of samples provided and it's an interesting job narrowing down the field. Anyway, I finally got my list down to the 'final five' and then I asked them to provide me a rough interpretation on something that was relevant to my project. Ultimately I chose one illustrator and we set to work.

The process of creating three book covers from scratch has taken about two weeks and I have to say, it has been a wonderful experience. My illustrator, Selena Boron, has done an excellent job and I will use her again I am sure for upcoming covers. Check out the partial book covers below and also the website linked to her name.

My advice for people who are looking for some specialist help? Don't be afraid to reach out. This Internet world is an amazing place!

The 10 Hour Project Manager

Well, it's been a busy few weeks and today I am getting around to finalizing my new reference book that will soon be released. It's entitled 'The 10 Hour Project Manager' and the premise is how to run successful projects by working smart, instead of hard. The book comes from spending many years running large projects for all sorts of companies. One thing I've noticed over the years is just how many hours the average Project Manager spends running around chasing things on projects, often unnecessarily. The book sets out to show how, with a little effort upfront, you can run a successful project on about 10 hours work a week, instead of the usual 45-50 hours that so many Project Managers work. I've had feedback from several previewers and the premise sounds good!

So, what's it all about? Here's a preview of the contents:
  1. Concepts / A brief introduction to Project Management
  2. Who's Who? - Know the project players
  3. Risks Management - Ignore this at your own peril
  4. Chess Playing - You don't get to be the king or the queen
  5. Project Lifecycle - From dawn 'til dusk
  6. Communications & Reporting - Too little or too much?
  7. How to become an accomplished PM - The little things that make a big difference
  8. Real life examples
  9. A consolidated list of do's and don'ts

And as the Introduction says:
Who's this book for? Most likely you are someone who has been managing projects for a few years, in a variety of different situations. Maybe you're a consultant that wanders from project to project, or an employee that gets passed from pillar to post depending on the hot topic of the month. Either way, you're not fresh out of school and you've seen a scary thing or two happen during project implementations. What you're really looking for are some words of wisdom or a guide you can frequently refer to that will enable you to manage your projects more efficiently and cut down your work weeks to something more sustainable. You would actually like to spend some quality time somewhere outside the confines of your office.

The objective of this book is to enable the reader to successfully manage nearly every project they will ever be presented with in less than 10 hours a week. That’s only 2 hours a day! Okay, when you've finished the laughing read on. This is actually what we are aiming for. I have managed successful projects in many companies, in many countries, in many situations, and nearly without fail have only paid very close attention to the management of that project for about 10 hrs a week, over the majority of the project lifecycle. In some cases, it was even less! But please don't tell anyone, after all what will all our employers have to say? And besides which, what would you all do with all the extra hours you will free up? Well, that's a topic for another day!

I'll be writing more about this book as it gets closer to print. But in the meantime, drop me an email if it sounds  like something you'd be interested in reading.

Meaning of 'The Mangler'

Apparently a piece I wrote last week about my first Gwillville book got picked up by a dictionary website while it was searching for examples of usages of words. The wonderful automatic robot search of Dictionary30.com found my Press Release and noticed I had used the words 'The Mangler.' So now Farnsworth has been immortalized as an example of word usage! Too funny!

The exact quote: 'Armed with his toolbox of hammers and staying well away from The Mangler, he’s determined to get to the bottom of it all'

The the article goes on to say: 'Read more on this news related to 'Mangler' at http://www.prlog.org/11378772-1st-in-series-of-comic-adventure-middle-grade-novels-published-fergus-fedderfeenys-food-factory.html'

Don't you just love Internet robots? If you're interested, the full page can be found HERE.

Oh well, back to the real work of the day...

PS. 'The Mangler' is actually a very scary piece of machinery that puts meat pies together. Farnsworth has good reason to be worried when he's around it too. Want to find out why? Then read the book:

Religion or Politics? Epic Fantasy - Xannu continued

Earlier today I wrote a little about my books and why I write epic fantasy and how the stories motivate me and inspire me.

In this article I wanted to write about the two great epic fantasy themes: Religion and Politics! To me they seem very odd themes to write about because the two taboo subjects in conversation are these very things. So why is it that religion and politics feature so frequently in epic fantasy books? The simple answer is that, at the end of the day, a lot of real life revolves around religion or politics.

Some epic fantasy novels revolve around one of the topics (George R Martin's fantasies are mostly based around politics and the Narnia books are mostly based around religion), while some revolve around both. I guess my books are more based around religion than politics.

My first book lays out a fairly Christian-like religion that at first glance appears to be the focus of the series. The aim is to give the reader something they can assimilate to. But, as the series progresses, so the religious themes become more and more complex. Which group of believers is right and which ones are wrong? These are constant questions many of us ask ourselves during our lives here on Earth. My books don't set out to necessarily answer these questions but to get the reader to ask themselves these complex questions. The books certainly provide a plethora of complex answers; all intertwined in an epic fantasy tale that includes battles originated because of beliefs and intrigue and plot based on the beliefs of others. They are books that will have you turning pages until the very bitter end.

Why don't you take a chance and download the first book? It's only $0.99. Who knows, you may even have to purchase the second! As one reader put it recently: "[the book] takes readers of all ages through a great tale of adventure. I recommend this for young adults seeking adventure and for adults seeking a "get away" from this world of "hurry up." This will be a series you will start and find yourself anxiously awaiting the next book to see what adventures are coming up."

Xannu - What are my books about?

It's an interesting process writing a series of books. You start with an idea and run with it and as you move along so the idea begins to take over. At least that's the way it was with me.

I like reading book series. I like the feeling of knowing there's another book out there with the same characters that I've got to know, who will have some more adventures and progress towards an ultimate destination. I often feel cheated by those short novels that just touch the surface of something before they simmer into a conclusion.

A good epic fantasy takes you on a journey that can last a long time. I like that feeling. I like to really get to know my story's characters.

When I first started writing my Xannu series of books I had a rough idea of where I was headed. I knew I wanted to write a series of five books and I sort of had the overall plot mapped out. I'm currently in the middle of writing book three and a lot of things have changed. The creative mind is an amazing thing. Plots have come up that I never even envisaged. Characters too. Several of them actually. Elements of the overall plot have changed well beyond what I originally thought. Somehow the original concept of the book has matured. During my writing I have found my purpose of the story. It has become something that I didn't even realize I was going to write when I started that journey.

Book one has a lot of the standard elements of a fantasy story, with other things sprinkled in for good measure. But, as a reader, I think you get the sense of where the book is headed. When it reaches it's climax you are pleased. There's been a few surprises along the way but you are left with a warm feeling inside and an idea of where book two is going to go. And that's as far as I let you get comfortable. As you read book two I start to make you question the assumptions you made in book one so that by the end of the book there really are a lot of unanswered questions in your head. Then in book three several things are blown completely out of the water, so to speak, as the sands shift once more. Ultimately this series of books will hopefully make you question everyday assumptions you have made about life in much the same was as the book tries to do. That is my intent. I have already rewritten the ending to book five several times in my head already, probably in much the same way as JK Rowling did with her series. I'm still not 100% sure where the journey will take me. I'll have to see where my creative mind ultimately takes me as I explore its outer edges.

Writing a series of epic fantasy books is a great responsibility. Your readers get to know everything about the world you create and will not accept you cheating them out of a good story. They feel they have invested in your make-believe world and so you had better keep getting it right if you want to keep them reading each successive book. I hope I am doing my job well enough. Now what was my next idea?

Amazon Kindle - Reading Books on the iPhone, Android, Blackberry & Droid

Have you got a smartphone? You know, one with a screen and the Internet? You probably have. Well did you know you can read books on your smartphone too? Maybe not.

They may only have a few inches of screen space but smartphones are really good for reading books on. In fact with the Amazon Kindle app loaded you can carry literally hundreds of books ready to read at any time, wherever you are.
I have to admit the first time I loaded up the app on my iPhone and opened a book I was very dubious. I thought it would be a pain only being able to read a few sentences at a time. Actually I was very wrong. Within a few minutes I had completely forgotten I was even reading on a phone! It was an easy experience, the phone is very lightweight and the screen very easy to read. Of course, the fact that you can alter the font size of the words and change the brightness of the screen added to the experience. Then there's the syncing. The Kindle app remembers exactly where you are in a book and the next time takes you straight to that place. It even syncs your reading experience across devices. So for example if you have two phones or an iPhone and an iPad, when you open up the other device it opens up the book exactly where you left off. Pretty damn clever!

I have embraced the Kindle app to such an extent I don't even buy real books any more. Now I can read a book wherever I am; waiting for a bus, in the bar, on a plane, watching TV. You name it - I've got an app for it! And one other feature I love? Don't tell anyone, but the Kindle app has a nighttime mode - to let you read in bed! It can reverse the text to give you white on black. This is really easy on the eyes when it's dark.

So, there you go. Try out the Kindle app on your smartphone - it's FREE!! Then when you've done that, you're going to need to curl up with a good book aren't you? So try one of mine! Click a book link below. Happy Reading!

Extra! Extra! Read all about it!

Farnsworth is in the news!

Today I found three articles about Fergus Fedderfeeny's Food Factory in the news:

Books For Kidz - Fedderfeeny’s Food Factory: First Of Comic Adventure Middle Grade Novels Published...

World News Blog - 1st in series of Comic Adventure Middle Grade novels published: Fergus Fedderfeeny’s Food Factory...

Ventriloquist Dummies Shop - Fergus Fedderfeeny's Food Factory...

Looks like the word is starting to get around.

Another day, another dollar

Well, it's been a busy week this week. Some weeks just seem especially so. Writing has continued on at full speed and marketing efforts have been stepped up a notch. Of course the big event of the week was the launch of the first Gwillville book and that's now available to purchase everywhere I can get it!

Next week it's time to make the finishing touches to my Project Management book and get that out and about. There's always something that needs attending to. I have been encouraged by my first few weeks sales and very soon it will be time to get down to some really serious marketing. I am hoping that by the end of next month I'll have five books published. At least that's the intention anyway. Someone may begin to take me seriously at that point!

I want to take a brief moment to thank all of you that have downloaded my books so far. It is well appreciated. Don't forget to write a review of them on Amazon when you are done though!

So, it's time to start thinking about the weekend. I have a busy writing schedule planned for tomorrow and Sunday so I don't know how my blog is going to fare. I need to get ahead of myself in posts again. I guess the DVR will just have to wait for another few days!

So, if you haven't already done so, please check out my books on Amazon and download a copy. Struggling authors always appreciate the patronage of their readers :-)

The Gwillville Mafia

I thought I'd give you a sample from my latest release Fergus Fedderfeeny's Food Factory today and introduce you to the infamous 'Gwillvill Mafia.' Enjoy the sample:

Hamish nodded and walked through to the back and climbed the stairs that led up to Shagoonda’s private apartment above the shop. As he opened the door that led into the living room he saw the brother and sister team that was obviously the ‘Gwillville Mafia’. “Hello there,” he said, nodding an acknowledgement to them both. “I’m Hamish.”

“Yeah,” said the dummy, a mid-height lad not much older than his early twenties. His hair was nearly cropped off completely and a scar ran down the left-hand side of his forehead practically reaching to his ear. Hamish turned and faced the lady and smiled again.

“Nice t’meet ya,” the lady said. She was tall and gangly, slightly older than her brother, Hamish guessed, with long blonde hair hanging loose. She was chewing gum and wearing a short skirt that barely covered her legs at all.

“Hello,” Hamish stammered, trying not to stare at the lady.

“You got a problem or summat?” the dummy interrupted.

Hamish turned to face him and smiled. “No, not at all. It’s…”

“Don’t mind ’im. He’s got no manners.” The lady crossed towards him and extended a hand. “I’m Sofia. And this is me bruvver, Stockley.”

Hamish shook hands with Sofia and glanced at Stockley again.

“Yeah,” Stockley nodded at Hamish.

“I see you’ve all met then?” Shagoonda said, arriving from downstairs. “Shall we get straight down to business?”

Hamish reluctantly let go of Sofia’s hand and she returned to sit next to her brother on the couch, crossing her legs as she sat. Hamish remained standing. “I have a small job that I need doing. Furtively, mind you. Are you sure you can be furtive?”

“There ain’t nuffin we can’t make if we got the right stuff.”

“He means secret, Stockley. Secretively.”

“Yeah.”

Hamish continued. “I need you to kidnap someone for me and take them to my warehouse north of the docks.”

“What’s in it for us?” Sofia asked.

“Yeah.”

“Stockley!” Sofia gritted her teeth as she chastised her brother. She turned to face Hamish again. “How much ya paying?”

“I was thinking two hundred duckets. One hundred now and another hundred on delivery of the package.”

“We gotta kidnap a package?” Stockley asked, confused.

Sofia punched Stockley hard on the arm. “Shut it,” She said. “Four ’undred. It’s gotta be dangerous else you wouldn’t ’ave called us.”

“Two hundred and fifty.”

“Free ’undred.”

“Three hundred it is then. Same goes as before. One hundred now and the rest when I get the package.”

“Alright. What’s the package?”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
PRLog (Press Release) – Mar 16, 2011 – Redmond author and resident, Paul Dorset has published “Fergus Fedderfeeny’s Food Factory,” a comic adventure book that marks the first in a hilarious and entertaining new series written especially for middle grade. The book, published at an introductory price of $2.99, is available on Amazon Kindle at amazon.com and all major ebook stores. The Gwillville series is based on many characters of the award-winning master dummy-builder Ray Guyll and is released in partnership with the Guyll family.

Farnsworth is worried. He’s counted them over again and again, but bags of the Food Factory’s vegetables are definitely missing! What will his boss, the ever so exact Fergus Fedderfeeny, say when he finds out? And then there’s the matter of the new wonderful tasting pies that Farnsworth is making. Farnsworth doesn’t exactly know how the recipes got changed or if the missing vegetables played a part in it. Armed with his toolbox of hammers and staying well away from The Mangler, he’s determined to get to the bottom of it all.

But things get complicated when unknown to Farnsworth, Fergus’ evil brother, Hamish wants to get in on the action and steal the recipe for the famous pies. What ensues is a comical adventure the likes of which Farnsworth has never had before. Can he save the day and also win the love of the beautiful policewoman Daisy Driftwood? Or will time and The Mangler catch up with him and lead to his ruin?

Fergus Fedderfeeny’s Food Factory is a comical adventure story set in the dummy town of Gwillville; a small coastal harbor town with a Fire Station, a Police Station, a school, restaurants and stores. There are houses too, where the dummies live and work and carry on their ageless day to day life. Yet not everything in Gwillville is exactly as it seems. Some of the laws of nature, which as humans we take for granted, work in slightly different ways.

Gwillville is populated with colorful characters that every reader will soon take to their hearts. With the bumbling hero Farnsworth, the precise and exact Fergus Fedderfeeny, the self-believing action hero policeman Sergeant Romeo, and the mafia dummy mastermind Sofia, there are a wealth of citizens to get to know. And you will as you follow the crazy everyday antics in Gwillville. After all, ventriloquist dummies get to have a life too!

Take a chance on the next bestselling author - Paul Dorset

Yes, the early reviews are in and they're are better than I had hoped for!

Xannu - The Prophecy has been available in the Amazon Kindle bookstore for a little over two weeks now and the early reviews give it praise. Here are a selection of the 5 star comments:

A Classic in the Making! - "...Taking place in both a fantasy world and present day, Paul Dorset takes readers of all ages through a great tale of adventure. I recommend this for young adults seeking adventure and for adults seeking a "get away" from this world of "hurry up." This will be a series you will start and find yourself anxiously awaiting the next book to see what adventures are coming up."

Fast paced, gripping and fun - "Wonderful book full of rich, interesting characters and fast paced, evolving plot lines. From the very beggining the reader is drawn into the tale and the pages turn as you long for "what happens next." I highly recommend this book for fantasy lovers, those who appreciate great characters, and those who like a good-old-fashioned page turner."

Refreshing and enjoyable read - "Refreshing children's fantasy that continues to draw you in until finished. As an adult, I enjoyed it as much as my kids did. Cannot wait till Mr Dorset writes and publishes another one!"

Rousing good read - "I have just finished reading this and I've immediately downloaded book two and the brevity of this review reflects my eagerness to get started reading it. Well done Mr Dorset...I look forward to the remaining books in this series."

Dummies guide to publishing an ebook on Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble and Smashwords

In this blog post I'm going to try and demystify the ebook publishing process. I've been through it and lived to tell the tale. So here goes. Stand by for a fun ride. It'll be worth the trials and tribulations along the way!

Ingredients:
  • Book (preferably in .doc format) - see detailed formatting guidelines below
  • Cover picture (in jpg format, max 1200 pixels high)
  • Short book description (400 characters max)
  • Proper book description (up to about 2,500 characters)
  • About the Author summary
  • Book categories (i.e. Young Adult, Fantasy, etc.)
  • Decision on selling price of book

Fergus Fedderfeeny's Food Factory by Paul Dorset. $0.99 from Smashwords.com
Farnsworth is worried. Bags of the Food Factory’s vegetables are definitely missing! What will his boss, Fergus Fedderfeeny, say when he finds out? Then there’s the wonderful tasting pies. He doesn’t know how the recipes got changed or if it’s because of the missing vegetables. Method:
  1. Do not attempt to publish your book without ALL the above ingredients. Delay or disaster could occur
  2. Ensure you have full publishing rights to the book you are publishing (I know this sounds odd, but if you have signed a contract with anyone, check and make sure...)
  3. Log in to SmashWords.com and create an author account if you don't already have one (trust me, there is method in my seeming madness) - complete your author profile
  4. Select 'Publish' on your dashboard and complete the page, copying and inserting the various ingredients from above as requested
  5. Press 'publish' and wait while SmashWords processes your book (this could take several hours. SmashWords uses a queue which will update to inform you of its progress)
  6. When SmashWords has published your book, go to its page (click on book title) and download it to your PC / iPad / Ebook reader. Look carefully at the results and decide whether anything needs reformatting. If so, reformat and resubmit book to queue. PLEASE NOTE - This step is really important and time spent here will saves hours later)
  7. Once book is successfully and satisfactorily published at SmashWords, go to Amazon.com (you will need an account at kdp.amazon.com. You will also need an author account at authorcentral.amazon.com)
  8. On your 'bookshelf' page (at kdp.amazon.com), select 'add a new title' and complete the form as requested (similar to SmashWords).
  9. Submit the book to Amazon and wait while it converts it. You will then be taken to a page where you can select royalty rate and book price. Finally select publish and then wait
  10. It will take 24 hours or  longer for your ebook to appear in the Amazon Kindle store. This is why it is advised to publish at SmashWords first (to ensure format looks correct). You cannot view or correct any publishing errors at Amazon until after the book is completely published
  11. Once book is published, attach it to your author profile at Amazon
  12. While book is publishing at Amazon you can publish it at Barnes & Noble in much the same way. Go to pubit.barnesandnoble.com and set up an author account
  13. Select 'add a title' and go through a similar routine as at the other sites. It will take up to 24 hours for the ebook to be available at the Barnes & Noble site
  14. Market shamelessly!

Exceptions:
  • You may receive emails from Amazon or Barnes & Noble if there are problems with publishing. Do not ignore these emails. The quicker and more fully you respond to them, the quicker your book will publish. Each email will delay the publishing process by at least a day
  • If you have previous books published at Amazon that you want linking to your author account you can do that at the authorcentral site
  • If there are also physical copies of the books that you are epublishing you will need to email amazon to 'merge their entries'. This can take several days
  • Check back regularly for publishing progress (often the books will appear in the bookstore before they are highlighted as 'published'. Try searching for them on Amazon or B&N)

Marketing materials have arrived!

The postman delivered a nice little box of goodies to my house at the weekend... some marketing materials for me :-)

I'm now armed with give-away Xannu business cards promoting my books and this blog site, and also larger postcards that do much the same. This means I'll be able to blitz the local neighborhoods and everyday folk as I meet them out and about. The complete cost for 500 business cards and 100 postcards? $20. The wonderful Vistaprint.com delivers again!

Buy a book in England!

I thought it was time to show a little love to my British readers today. I had a look at my blog stats and saw that British visitors accounted for over 12% of my total views. That's nearly 1 in every 8 visitors!

Did you know that my first book 'Xannu - The Prophecy' is only £0.70 in the UK Amazon bookstore??? That is amazingly cheap!

Yep, it's the same book that retails here in the US for $0.99, but priced in pounds sterling. My second book 'Xannu - The Healing' is priced at £2.83, another good buy. And you can get either book just by clicking on the picture on the left :-) The link takes you directly to the UK Amazon Kindle store. Nice and easy. So, please go download them today!

Are you from Canada? Apparently a lot of my blog readers are. But alas, I could not find my ebooks for sale on Canada's Amazon site. :-(  I am going to have to investigate this. Maybe Canadian customers can buy from the US site? Perhaps someone will let me know.

Lastly for those of you that can't find the book on Amazon or who want to download it to read on any ebook-reader (including PCs), I've included the SmashWords links below. All my books are available for purchase anywhere in the world from this site and you can pay in all sorts of ways. Anyway, that's it for now. I hope to receive plenty of feedback from you all soon.

Xannu - The Prophecy - Excerpt (Terry's School)

Still don't know if you like my writing? Well, here's a chance to read a little (of course you can download 20% FREE of all my books over at SmashWords.com - also see links at end of post).

But, that aside, here's a small sample of my writing: A class at Terry's school.

With the afternoon bell came Chemistry. The most hated of all subjects as far as Terry was concerned. He took his place on the second to last bench in the chemistry lab. Joe sat next to him. “I hope we do something interesting today,” he said.

“Me too,” said Joe.

Dr. Burke, the bespectacled balding chemistry teacher entered the room wearing his long white lab coat, bristling with fifteen different types of pens and pencils, and seated himself on top of the first bench, opposite the children. “Good afternoon,” he began. “Today we will investigate the properties of oxygen.” A groan went up from several of his bored students. “Miss Bromine will be along in a minute or two to help me distribute the equipment to each team of three. So, in the meantime, split yourselves into teams and decide which one of you will do the experiment, which one will observe and which one will record the results.”

Miss Bromine was the main reason why some kind of order existed in class. She was a particularly attractive young woman, or so rumor had it from some of the older children at school. Terry couldn’t quite see the appeal she held but he did like her long dark reddish brown hair, and Joe always said she had a way of looking at him that made him feel weak at the knees; whatever that meant.

Terry and Joe teamed up with Brian, a complete misfit of a student that was either in the Headmaster’s study or lying beaten up on the playing field eighty percent of the time. Why he attached himself to Joe, Terry couldn’t understand. Even more annoying was why Joe put up with it. Terry guessed that with Brian around, Joe didn’t feel so bad himself. Brian was insisting that he be the one that performed the experiment today. Even Joe realized this was not a good idea, and so the two of them were trying to convince Brian of his superior surveillance abilities so that he would accept the role of observer. Brian was having none of it and so, extremely reluctantly, they had to agree to his wishes and Terry took the role of observer, leaving Joe to record everything that happened.

The loud nonsensical chatter stopped suddenly and Terry looked up. Miss Bromine had entered the class, pushing a large filled trolley in front of her. A wolf whistle was heard from somewhere behind Terry.

“None of that kind of behavior, if you don’t mind,” Dr. Burke said, glaring towards the back of the class. He now had a rather red face and was looking a little embarrassed at Miss Bromine’s presence. To hide his awkwardness he moved quickly over to the trolley and started to distribute the equipment. Miss Bromine looked briefly at the floor and then helped him do the same.

“Now children,” Dr. Burke began, returning to the front of the class, “Today’s experiment is extremely simple. Watson, sit down, shut up and listen. You have four items in front of you. WATSON!” A boy on the third bench nearly had a heart attack and yelped involuntarily as a piece of chalk hit him squarely between the eyes. “You will see a candle, a taper, a stopwatch and a large glass jar with a lid. You will place the candle in the glass jar, take the lighted taper to it, close the lid on the jar and record what happens to the candle, every ten seconds over a one minute period. Any questions?” Watson looked up, thought about saying something, but quickly lowered his eyes again. No one moved. “OK, begin.”

What happened during the following five minutes could not be rationally explained, no matter how hard Terry tried, as he did several times in fact, during the following hours. For some inexplicable reason Brian did not think that matches were provided to light the tapers, that would in turn light the candles. He had got it into his head that the gas taps on the front of the benches would provide a source of fire for the experiment. It had all happened so quickly. Brian had opened the tap for the gas while Terry looked across at him with a puzzled look on his face. Joe was busy getting a match from the group next to him and didn’t actually see that part of the scenario unfold. Knowing that Brian was more of a klutz than he was on most occasions, Joe thought he would perform the dangerous part of the experiment, actually lighting the taper. Of course, he didn’t know that for five seconds now, gas had been pouring into their workspace and was rapidly filling the classroom.

Joe leant forward and struck the match at about the same time that Dr. Burke, smelling something odd, came to investigate. With a ‘whoosh’ that Terry, Joe and maybe even Brian would remember to their dying days, a two foot wand of flame ignited across their bench, vaporizing all the pens and pencils in Dr. Burke’s pockets instantly and setting his lab coat ablaze. Joe screamed, and reached forward to turn the gas off. Amazingly, Brian had beaten him to it, but unfortunately, all he had succeeded in doing was turning on the adjoining tap and that too had caught, and it was busily trying to catch light to his own lab coat. By now the whole class was screaming. It was at times like this that Terry wished he were back in Triluika, doing soldierly things. But those experiences had taught him something and so, without further hesitation, he reached forward, past the fiery mess all about him and turned off the gas taps. This was also roughly the same time that Miss Bromine chose to throw a large bowl of cold water over several people seated on the fated bench.

For an instant that seemed to last forever, perfect calm existed. Reality soon kicked back in, however, and Terry could see Brian crying, seated on the floor, mopping his face and poking at a small hole in the front of his lab coat. The top of the bench was a complete mess. There were several burns on the wood, and candles, jars and everything else were scattered in disarray. That just left Dr. Burke, who had taken the brunt of the disaster. Wiping soot from his face, it was immediately obvious that the previously balding Dr. Burke would henceforth be known as the bald Dr. Burke. He was also minus one eyebrow as far as Terry could see. As for his lab coat, there was a very large hole in it. In his sweater too. There was even a hole in an orange shirt that was showing a little from underneath. Dr. Burke had obviously had a very lucky escape.

Thankfully, Dr. Mallory, the head of Science, hearing all the screaming, had arrived in the classroom by this time and was busy taking charge. Dr. Burke was ushered away by Miss Bromine, sobbing into her shoulder, and Terry’s class was sent to the break room to relax and ‘calm down a little’. “We’ll deal with this in the morning,” was all Dr. Mallory would say, glaring at several boys as they left the class.
