New Blood - Definitely Not Another Vampire Story

In the planning of New Blood, I didn't want to write yet another teenage vampire novel that centered around mushy love scenes. I mean, come on, that's just not me! No, I'm more of an in depth, subterfuge and intrigue kind of writer. Yes I like a little action and passion, like any other writer; but a story needs to have depth for me to enjoy writing it.

So when I started writing New Blood I didn't really have a solid plan of how the underlying currents would play out. Of course, one book down in the series, I certainly do now! That's one of the exciting things about writing a book - seeing where the adventure takes you.

New Blood is fundamentally a book about power and what a person will do to get it and what it can do to a person once they have it. It's also a book about technology, genetics and several other things that we, as humans, are starting to take for granted now. I wanted New Blood to ask several 'what if?' questions. And the book certainly does that. But more than that, it wraps the questions and underlying currents in a story that, at its core, is a love story about two seemingly opposite people. One is a power-seeking monster with a special talent for getting what he wants and the other is a young, innocent woman, looking for love in all the wrong places. Can they, should they, will they ever get together? Only the passage of the series can answer that question.
