Bye-bye!

Bye-bye
======

Two leaves the last two to be on the tree
So sad it is the last two.
Saying the only farewell there is to say
Bye-bye says one to the other.
Bye-bye.

Marketing Your Books - A FREE Chapbook

A few months ago I published a FREE chapbook that serves as the introduction to my Southern Lands YA Epic Fantasy series. What is a Chapbook? Well, quite simply it's a short story that can be printed out at home and given to anyone you like. It's a very cheap marketing aid. My Chapbook is 20 pages long (about 6,500 words) and prints up on 5 sheets of paper, stapled in the middle, just like a little paperback.

Anyway, it's a cool idea and lots of fun. If you're running short of good marketing ideas, why not give it a go? And now onto the book:

For fans of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and The Narnia Chronicles, the prequel to a thrilling epic fantasy series…

A teenage farm lad experiences trials and tribulations over the course of a three day period that will change his life forever.

“Sometimes it is necessary to take that which is given to you, even when it seems not to your advantage. For everything has its part to play; its place in things.” (Pika'Al 10:10-11, The Scriptures of Al'Zaneed)

Six Sentence Sunday #11

On the theme of Six Sentence Sunday, here are the opening sentences from my FREE chapbook, Teern Truthbringer, which serves as an introduction to my YA Fantasy series, The Southern Lands.

“Teern,” his father called out, throwing the young man a sword as he turned toward him. “Teern, catch!”
Teern reached out and grabbed the hilt of the sword, quickly moving his hands into position. “What is it?”
“Kriks,” his father replied. “Coming down the hill and headed this way. We need to be ready.”

About Paul Dorset: Paul Dorset was born in Poole, Dorset in England in 1960 but has been living in America since 1995. He has been writing for many years and some of his early works were published in 'teen advice' columns. He has also had many technical articles published, mostly in the field of Computing.

Paul currently lives in the Pacific Northwest but has traveled extensively and worked many times with teens and youth groups. It is this background combined with a vivid imagination that has enabled him to weave a tapestry of magic into complete novels. His first epic fantasy series, aimed at young adults, is entitled 'The Southern Lands'. However, the storyline is more than exciting enough to keep adults turning pages as the story unfolds.

Paul is a father of five who has worked as a computer consultant for more than 30 years. His publications include fantasy novels for ages 12-plus, how-to books for adults, and dark paranormal thrillers for ages 16+. He incorporates his extensive experience in computers - and his insightful perspective on the possibilities therein - in novels that include layers of contemporary intrigue, romance and mystery.

Chapbooks - The Creation Process

Earlier this week I wrote about my upcoming chapbook - Teern Truthbringer, an introduction to The Southern Lands YA fantasy series that I will be releasing next week. In my previous post I briefly mentioned the creation process and that is the subject of this post.

Creating and printing a chapbook is a relatively straightforward task, especially if you have a program such as Microsoft Word. I create all my manuscripts using Scrivener (which I have blogged about regularly), but for printing and final formatting I export the manuscript to Word. Following are the steps needed to print a formatted chapbook:
  1. Create your finished manuscript in Word (or similar word processor)
  2. Set page margins to a minimum (i.e. 0.2")
  3. Set page headers and footers to a minimum
  4. Add page numbering (optional)
  5. Increase minimum font size to 14pt (i.e. Book  Antiqua 14pt)
  6. Visually check page layout and try to condense / expand manuscript to fit within a multiple of 4 pages (e.g. 8, 12, 16, 20, etc.). This will make the finished product more visually appealing and will leave less blank pages
  7. Set printing preferences to be 2 pages per side and full duplex (If you don't have duplex option you will need to manually re-feed the paper into the printer to print the second side). Also set the printer to assemble as a book (see screenshot below)
  8. Save your Word document
  9. Print out your document (the pages should appear in an order such that when you fold the book in half with all sheets together, the pages run in sequence 1 to n)
  10. Staple the chapbook together using a long reach stapler

Now all you have to do is give away your chapbook to all your friends!

As a couple of extra marketing ideas, you probably want to include links to your website and your blog inside your chapbook. Also it's a good idea to include a list of all your published books. After all, you want your readers to buy one of them after they have read your FREE chapbook!

Watch out for next week's post where I announce the launch of my chapbook and give you a link to download your own copy for FREE!

Chapbooks - Teern Truthbringer

A while ago I was reading several articles about how to better market your writing and one particular article that caught my attention was about chapbooks. What are chapbooks? Well, quite simply they are several sheets of paper that are bound or stapled together that contain a story or series of articles.

As an Indie Author it's difficult constantly thinking of new ways to market yourself and so the idea of writing a chapbook, printing out copies and just giving them to people seemed like a wonderful idea. But what should my chapbook contain?

I decided that I would write a prologue to my Southern Lands series of books, and explain how the protagonist became the person he is in the book. And so Teern Truthbringer the chapbook came into existence. I finished writing the 6,500 word chapbook a couple of weeks ago and it is now edited and almost ready for printing. The chapbook will be available as a free download in one week's time and in my next blog post I'll talk about the physical process of preparing and printing the chapbook.

In the meantime, here are the opening few paragraphs:

“Teern,” his father called out, throwing the young man a sword as he turned toward him. “Teern, catch!”
Teern reached out and grabbed the hilt of the sword, quickly moving his hands into position. “What is it?”
“Kriks,” his father replied. “Coming down the hill and headed this way. We need to be ready.”
Teern threw down the bag he had been holding in his other hand and ran toward the far side of the room. He pulled on his tightly fitting leather breastplate and secured it at the side. “How many?”
“Just three or four I think,” his father replied, moving into position behind a window. “And hopefully they will pass us by.” He motioned for his son to join him by his side. “Your mother is already taking her hiding position.”
Teern stood behind his father’s shoulder, trying to follow his line of sight. In the far distance he spotted the small, squat figures coming down the hillside toward them. It had only been during the last couple of years they had been bothered by the kriks. Before that they had lived, mostly in solitude, on the outskirts of Treloon in their farmhouse. Teern watched as the kriks drew near. Yes, there were four of them. Each was about three feet high and naked except for a cloth that covered their loins. In their hands they each carried a two-bladed dagger they called a tissop. Teern took a sharp intake of breath and drew back a little into the shadows to watch them. He knew now not to underestimate their size. Their skins were as tough as wizened leather and they could move with tremendous agility. Their tissops were usually poison-tipped and a single cut could mean your death. Teern prayed they would pass their house by...
